Box Butte County adds 26 wells, boosting irrigated acres to 45 000 as 315 wells serve the area. Soil Conservation Service aids irrigation with underground pipe reducing erosion and easing weed control while recommending concrete-lined ditches. Extension Service County Agent Don D Miller offers further help.
A public meeting led to plans for an industrial development corporation in Kimball county. About 10 founders named to initiate the group, proposing Forward Kimball Industries Inc with authorized stock of 100000 and 5000 paid in. Investors can join as original incorporators for 30 days by buying stock in blocks of 100 dollars.
Sir Winston Churchill, British statesman, named member of Chadron Volunteer Fire Department on his 90th birthday. A committee approved the application, awarding a certificate, fireman badge and helmet, a hall key, a newspaper subscription, and two New Year’s Eve ball tickets. The honor cites his honorary US and Nebraska citizenship status.
Hemingford Co-Op Telephone Company signed an engineering contract with Nixon Engineering of Omaha for design and construction of a new dial system. A loan contract with REA was signed and David Weld, of Rapid City, S D, was hired as the new manager. Switchboard equipment bid date set for Feb 9, 1965. Board includes R C Miller as chairman and four other directors.
The town board of Lodgepole orders a 20 percent reduction in December electric bills as a Christmas gift to residents. The move targets relief for households amid holiday expenses and reflects local government aid during the season.
The Cheyenne County Assessor Lloyd Mintken and staff brace for the 1965 assessment season opening January 4 at 8 a.m. Taxpayers have through February to pay before penalties apply. About 11 000 motor vehicle tax statements are being prepared as forms and schedules for farms, businesses, and stocks are readied for mailing. Assistant assessors will cover Potter Gurley Dalton and Lodgepole, with schooling day for all assessors.
Sheriff Floyd Stahr of Deuel County rescues a two year old boy found cold and crying on Highway 30 near Chappell. Two women transporting toward Lincoln left the child at the sheriff’s office noting the truck’s abandoned state. The boy’s father Frank Rose of Cheyenne Wyoming had left him asleep in the truck while seeking tire repair. Rose later learned the child was safe in Chappell and returned to Ogallala.
Sidney National Bank announces higher interest on time deposits effective immediately. One year certificates now yield 4.5 percent and six month certificates 4 percent. Officials expect the higher rates to attract funds back from other communities, notably Colorado, where the higher returns have long been offered.
CAAPresident Homer Young announced at the 36th annual Co-Op Meeting in Kansas City December 9 through 11 that CAA volume last year surpassed 249 million dollars with savings over 16.5 million. CAA manufactures and distributes petroleum feed fertilizer and other farm supplies. Owned by about 1700 farmer owned local cooperatives spread across eleven states. Attendees from Cheyenne County included Ed Lessman Dalton and Jim Deaver Bob Schmitt Sidney.
A Panhandle forecast calls for clear to partly cloudy conditions tonight and Tuesday with lows of 5 to 15 and highs in the 30s. The five day outlook shows temperatures about five degrees below normal with no major changes until turning colder later in the week, with highs in the 30s and lows 5 to 15 and scattered light snow likely toward week’s end.
125 students begin at the Sidney Occupation Training Program headquarters on Sioux Army Depot as classrooms, barracks, and resident housing are readied. Supt. Russell Pedersen says orientation and testing will occupy opening week with classes set to start next week. James W. McDaniel, 71, died after a stroke at Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are planned at the First Methodist Church with military rites at Greenwood Cemetery. He had long hauled mail from Sidney Post Office and was a member of several veterans and civic groups. Survivors include his widow Clara Dee Petteys, a daughter Bonita, three grandchildren, and siblings in California.
Alliance hosts Panhandle Athletic Conference meeting to expand membership for a December 28 30 holiday basketball tournament at the Community Building. Current members Hay Springs Sidney St Patrick Hemingford Minatare St Agnes Academy with Mullen as a new sixth team. reps from Morrill Bayard Rushville Crawford expressed interest. District elimination tourney set for Chadron February 23 27.
John Henry Dissmore 67, manager of Sioux Villa housing, died Sunday after a heart attack. Funeral set for Wednesday at First Methodist Church. He will be buried in a Minnesota national cemetery. He leaves widow Margaret, daughter Colette, three grandchildren, and brother Earl. He held church and civic roles including Masonic Lodge, American Legion, and Kiwanis treasurer.
Senator Pierre Salinger 39 of California announces resignation on December 31 to permit George Murphy, the Republican who defeated him on November 3, to be appointed. Salinger also says he has been elected a vice president of National General Corp., parent of Fox Intermountain Theaters that runs the Fox Theater in Sidney.
A. H. Duxbury has announced retirement after more than two decades as Assistant Manager and then Manager of the VA Regional Office in Lincoln. He will end his service at year’s end and plans to remain in Lincoln.
Local reaction to Secretary of Defense McNamara’s plan to abolish the Army Reserves is measured. No official word reached nearby units, with 22 to 23 years of service implications for reservists. Rumors hint at merging reserves with the Air National Guard.

Postmaster General John A Gronouski announced suspension of normal mail deliveries on Saturday December 26 to grant a three day Christmas weekend at minimum government cost. Employees who would have worked that day receive a compensatory day off next week with substitutes hired. Savings estimated at 3 to 4 million dollars. Most of the 590000 postal employees to get the long weekend.
