State Feeding More Cattle This Winter

Nebraska is feeding more cattle this year than a year ago, per the Nebraska Co operative Livestock and Crop Service. Nationally, numbers fed are expected to be higher. BR A I shipments into Nebraska July–November are about 5 percent smaller than 1937. Direct shipments July 1 to November 22 show 63,000 vs 26,000 a year ago. Combined sources indicate a 34 percent rise in state shipments. The corn crop is better than expected but tight corn supplies limit sharp increases. Large hay and roughage supplies and slow corn prices support feeding. Demand for cattle to use feed is evident in increased stocker and feeder moves into the corn belt, with November the largest month in seven years.
