Sidney stores extend hours to nine tonight and tomorrow while many shops close at six for church programs. Most retail outlets observe Monday December 26 as a holiday, with last-minute shoppers boosting volume to reach 1936 1937 levels amid some price cuts. Grocery and meat departments anticipate a busy Saturday as Christmas approaches.
The annual secretary of commerce report shows total cash farm income fell about 3 percent from the previous year. Cash income from farm marketings was similar, while government rent and benefit payments dropped by over a third. Harvests of major crops were larger than 1936-37, yet higher supplies met weak demand and lower prices amid depressed industrial conditions, with cash income in decline through most of the year. exports rose one fifth to a seven year high.
Sidney businesses continue a long running year end custom with Christmas greeting advertisements in The Telegraph. Many stores and firms also place New Year messages in the issue before January 1 and readers expect these notices. If any business was missed, call to reserve a New Year greeting space.
Leonard McRae an 18 year old escapee from a reformatory was captured shortly after midnight Tuesday at Bridgeport only 16 miles from his Bayare home. He had fled Monday night by hiding in a car trunk and later stole a second vehicle in Lincoln before disappearing. Authorities said McRae was found but no further details were provided.
Sidney public schools will close this afternoon for the Christmas holidays and will not reopen until Tuesday morning January 3. The closure gives students and teachers a full ten day holiday. Most classrooms will hold Christmas programs today before dismissal. many teachers plan to leave Sidney this evening for their homes.
Reports say oil drilling has resumed on the Selleck ranch 16 miles north of Broadwater with Oliver Blankenship again in charge. No details on hole depth or rig type have been received.
A new streamlined locomotive built by General Electric and Union Pacific, capable of pulling 15 cars at 125 miles per hour, uses turbine-driven electricity instead of pistons. The unit packs 5000 horsepower, reclaims boiler steam as water, and regenerates energy via generators and braking. It weighs about 265 tons per cab and runs 90 feet long.
Notices publish three Street improvement districts Nos 7 8 and 9 in The Telegraph. Property owners have twenty days to file written objections. if 51 percent protest by January 12, district creation becomes automatic. Four protests were filed for district No 8. no petitions seen for Nos 7 and 9.
Dr W T Kehse spoke to the Lions club at noon Wednesday outlining the United States as a nation with complete religious freedom and contrasting it with countries where oppression erases free religious choice. The address stood as the main feature of the meeting. Norman Smith, University of Colorado drum major, demonstrated baton twirling and taught drills. he is a former national high school champion conducting local classes.
Dr and Mrs Roche left Wednesday night for Dubuque Iowa to attend the funeral services for Edward Reilly a brother in law of Mrs Roche who was killed in a head on car bus collision near Springfield Missouri Tuesday night Reilly was en route to his home in Tulsa Oklahoma to spend Christmas with his family when the crash occurred Jason Roche son of the Roches was to return to Sidney from Dubuque where he attends college but remained there to be with his parents
Federal crop authorities reported 3 824 600 acres of Nebraska lands sown to winter wheat this year, a decline of about 1 million acres from the record seeded acreage of 47 721 000 in 1927. The condition of winter wheat December 1 was 51 percent of normal, the same as a year ago.

General Manager No A Williams of Union Pacific assured Mayor Roche that the hotel might be kept open but offered no guarantee his intervention would avert closure. Williams spoke after Roche urged Williams to prevent layoffs affecting about 17 workers as plans to close the hotel were disclosed. The hotel and dining room have lost money for months, with previous protests delaying closures. The Sidney chamber of commerce wired President Jeffers and Williams to influence a delay to save jobs. The Telegraph cites a reliable source that the state plans a permanent reroute for Highway 19 south of Sidney within months. An engineer from the state highway department has reportedly been assigned, though John Billeter says he knows of no definite action. The plan, announced months ago, would link the route to the Colorado line north of Pestz, requiring a new road south from Lorenzo east of the Burlington tracks, due to reported unsatisfactory current Nebraska usage and several accidents.
Sidney high school hosts North Platte in a non conference tilt. The Maroons and Platters traded leads before North Platte pulled away briefly, but Sidney tied it 28 all to force overtime where the Platters pulled out a 30 28 win. St Patrick's Academy edged Pet Agnes Academy Alliance 29 27 with Joe Arendel scoring in the extra period. McNulty led St Agnes with 16 points while Donald Fahy paced the Pats with 13.
Weather forecast indicates a white Christmas across western Nebraska with light snow flurries and low temperatures. Flurries were reported yesterday with minimal accumulation and drifting on rural roads, while highways remained open and drivers urged to use main routes for travel.
Nebraska produced 107,735,000 bushels of corn in 1938, per final USDA estimates. November 1 figure was 97,812,600. last year 82,992,000. 1927-36 average 118,280,000. normal production about 220,000,000. Weather during maturity boosted output beyond November projections. All wheat production in Nebraska pegged at 55,714,000 bushels versus 39,389,000 predicted.
Cecilia A Hurd wife of Judge Leslie G Hurdioff Bridgeport died Saturday December 17 after a heart attack. She was 88 years eight months and one day. The Hurds celebrated their golden wedding on December 27 1921 and would have reached their 67th anniversary next Tuesday. They were married in 1871 at Bloomingdale which was Mrs Hurd's birthplace.
The annual Christmas dance sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary will be held Monday evening at the city auditorium. To avoid Christmas Day falling on Sunday the event was delayed a day. Mink Barker and his orchestra will provide the music. Tickets for couples cost one dollar and for extra ladies twenty five cents.
Hight of the 16 patrolmen now engaged in driver's license examination will be transferred to patrol duty after January 1, says Capt. R.F. Weller of the highway safety patrol. This will increase to 35 the number of men now working on patrol. Fewer men are needed now for the examining part of the safety program, and the pairs in each area for examining will be split at certain points where the work is especially heavy at times. There will be no change in the headquarters of the men assigned to patrol duty.
Awards in the ad writing contest conducted by six Sidney stores and individuals for eight weeks will be announced Friday December 30. The Sidney Clothing Company provides three prizes a $50 Philco radio a $15 gladstone bag and a $10 leather jacket. Winners chosen by The Telegraph advertising department and Sterling radio will be named on that date. Continuous strong entries included caps for newspaper and radio use. Three finalists were narrowed from seven with identity kept confidential among organizers.
J C Penney Company store in Sidney to pay Christmas bonuses. Regular staff with over one year service receive two weeks extra pay. Employees who joined less than a year ago get an extra day’s pay for each month with the company. HH S Strom announced this week.
Mrs W G Campbell jr learned on Wednesday that her brother Wynne Hill of Bellefonte Pa was killed in an automobile accident earlier that day. Hill operated two hotels and other properties in Selinsgrove. The fatal crash occurred on the outskirts of Bellefonte. He is survived by his wife.
Wheat loans offered under the Agricultural Adjustment Act run to December 31 with farm rates from 39 to 60 cents per bushel. Cheyenne county has issued 334 such loans, administered by the Community Credit Corporation and AAA county committees who certify eligibility and oversee grading and storage. Applications should be made soon through the county ACP committee or county agent office.
Nebraska farmers trying grain sorghum for the first time must decide how to feed it. Professor William J Loeffel says results depend on livestock class. Cattle fed best when seeds are coarsely ground. fine grinding wastes money and palatability. Ground head yields feed similar to ground ear corn. stalks provide roughage reducing hay use. Sheep can chew sorghums without grinding, with no exceptions noted.
The Sidney Rifle Club won six straight before a tight one point loss to Oneida Rifle Club of Oneida New York by a score of 1856 to 1857. Individual scores included Mathews 380 Doran 373 Bieternitz 37 Pierson 371 Kahler 360. In three other postal matches Sidney defeated Oswego City Rifle Club 920 903 Harrisburg 1395 1982 and Natrona 920 299.
