Grassed Waterways Pioneer in Cheyenne County
Bonkiewicz brothers Florian Gene and Joe, farming with their father south of Colton, built what is likely Cheyenne County’s first grassed waterway. The project adapted a top conservation method, reshaping and revegetating a gully to control erosion, with SCS endorsing the practice as beneficial for soil and pasture. The work demonstrates five steps: bind, fill, pack, seed and manure, creating a usable, hayable, and pasture-friendly waterway. The brothers also perform terracing and stubble mulch tilling.

Farm Labor Placement Shifts to USES in Cheyenne County
Beginning January 1, the local United States Employment Service will handle farm labor placement, replacing the Farm Labor office at the post office. The Cheyenne County Labor Association will continue its appointment and placement of about 1500 workers annually. Francis Hiner and W. P. Bullock say cooperation with extension and USES will keep labor affairs efficient. The association, formed in 1943, lists officers George Coulter, H. H. Misegadis Sund, Bullock, Kathleen Mohatt, Albin Olson, and Henry Schnell. Over 1000 workers come for wheat harvest, with about 200 itinerant workers and 200 Mexican nationals also involved.
