In Omaha on August 21 Charles Ware was appointed to fill the vacancy as general manager of the Union Pacific after W B Scott resigned to become president of the Texas and Louisiana lines of the Harriman system. Ware previously led operation as general superintendent and assistant general manager. In Iowa City on August 22 Dr George E Shambaugh, an alumnus of the University of Iowa, won the International Congress of Otology prize for best ear anatomy and physiology research, the first American to earn the honor.
