Hope Seen For Big Springs I-80 Change But Hossack Thinks Design Is All Right
State Highway Engineer John Hossack said the Big Springs interchange on I 80 will stay as planned, while Governor Tiemann said feedback from Sidney town hall will be considered. About 150 residents from Sidney and nearby towns attended tensions rose over whether the junction would push traffic into Colorado. Hossack and design engineer Ken Gotulla explained the Bureau of Public Roads rejected the original plan for a straighter western route, but a proposed reverse design could be built with similar cost. Local attorney Jack Knicey challenged the Bureau’s stance, noting he has files showing no firm decision. The meeting agreed the reverse plan could be built economically. State Senator George Fleming urged flexibility to favor Nebraska, but Hossack argued changes would delay completion by about eight months. Bids for early construction east of Big Springs were opened, with a contractor not yet announced for roughly 18 miles of grading and paving. Governor Tiemann left open the possibility of redesign if delays prove minor and a rede sign could be tested.
