Tax tips for separated spouses and scholarships explained

Taxpayers separated from a spouse have a choice of filing jointly or separately depending on status. Joint returns combine income and expenses while each party remains liable for the full tax. Separate returns require each to report only their own income but deductions must be handled the same if either itemizes. Details for 1970 will be available in January. If refund is delayed, contact regional IRS service center or local office with identifying details. Scholarships are usually tax exempt unless services tied to the award are performed, in which case the earned portion is taxable. For more information send a postcard to the IRS District Director to obtain Publication 507.
