President Nixon thanks Nebraska Congressman Dave Martin for backing the administrations vetoes on fiscal 1971 spending bills. Martin sustained vetoes of Education and Independent Offices appropriations, supporting restraint on government spending and aiding price stability.
The Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission approved four drilling ventures across three counties this week. In Kimball County, Todd Gross hires B-W Drilling for a wildcat at Linn No 1. Centennial Oil enlarges Voss Field with Gear Drilling at Davis No 1. Scotts Bluff County projects No 1 Bajewick with Deal Drilling and Robert Thorpe. Cheyenne County proceeds with Cove Field Johnson No 1 to explore new oil prospects with Gear Drilling as contractor.
Lincoln reports Nebraska 4-H enrollment at 42,838 members a year rise of 3,000 with 3,137 clubs and about 8,000 volunteer leaders. 88,104 projects span home economics agriculture safety art and hobbies reflecting urban and rural participation growth and the program's wide range of projects.
Sen. Hruska announced more than 4.3 million dollars in FAA grants to 28 Nebraska communities since 1965 for airport expansion and improvement. Omaha received about 2.02 million. grants ranged from 261,975 to 22,260 at Kimball, with numerous allocations across Albion, Alliance, Aurora, Grand Island, Lincoln, Sidney, Scottsbluff and others as Civil Aeronautics Board expands Omaha air service.
Richard P. Matsch referee in bankruptcy orders a special creditors meeting on August 31 at 9:30 a.m. in Courtroom 4 Denver to consider the trustee's proposed abandonment of 213 South Chestnut St Kimball Nebraska. If approved, the case will close as a no asset. Claims filing deadline already passed.
Early Thursday at the viaduct east of Sidney a 1963 Oldsmobile driven by Calvin Matthews of Ogallala struck the bridge top, a second car stopped to help, then a third Eastbound 1965 Dodge rear ended the second. Damages total about 1,375 dollars. no injuries reported.
Three cars were involved in a chain reaction at 9:50 a.m. Thursday on Highway 30, three miles east of Sunol. A 1965 Pontiac driven by Richard Weaver, a 199? Camera driven by John Klein, and a 1986 Chrysler driven by Glen Hixon collided when slowing for a turning vehicle. Damages totaled $400 with no injuries.
The University of Nebraska News Service reports June shows an 8.4 percent year over year rise in Sidney’s general business index and a 7.3 percent rise in retail sales, though retail sales were down 67 percent from May 1970. Major June gains occur in Hastings, McCook, Omaha, Fairbury, and others, with Lincoln remaining below 1969 levels.
Weather this week featured a swing from hot to cool with overcast skies and no rain. FAA flight service station data show temperatures from 55 to 96 degrees on Monday, 62 to 94 on Tuesday, 59 to 85 on Wednesday, 58 to 74 on Thursday, and around 60 to 66 by noon today, with traces of precipitation noted on several days.

Fox Theatre manager Vern Austin challenged Atkins Shoes owner Barney Atkins to fry an egg on the sidewalk before a Beatniks attraction. The egg fried, creating a mess and proving Mr. Austin right. The coincidence with the poster advertisement was noted.
Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce asks for housing data as I 80 work shifts east to west. About fifty families may move to Sidney from Kimball and nearby towns. Ed Cole says the chamber will run a housing clearinghouse and urges rental information for houses apartments and trailer spaces. Sidney aims to host workers for two years with stable rents and a welcoming image.
National officials warn rural electric power co ops may raise energy prices due to higher operating costs and the push to form their own financing agencies. Inflation, rising fuel costs, and higher interest rates drive the need for more expensive borrowing, while co ops serve about seven million consumers. Partridge notes efficiency gains have slowed, as costs rise from 1957 59 to 11 58 index by May. Wayne Bond and Gene Leinemann attended a Lincoln meeting on co op lending to fund expansion and service improvement.
USDA report shows hail insurance coverage in the United States more than tripled from 1950 to 1967 reaching 3.5 billion dollars, then grew little from 1967 to 1969. Expansion of soybean production in the Corn Belt contributed to the increase, as soybeans are more vulnerable to hail damage than corn.
