Hopper Catcher Aids Farmers In Grasshopper Control
Farmers across the county report catching about one bushel per acre using homemade grasshopper catchers. The trough device 12 feet long uses kerosene oil water and crankcase oil to trap hoppers then removes them with a garden rake. Some machines achieve 4 to 8 bushels per acre and variants include skids and shielded backs. A sample unit is being built at the Sidney farm bureau plant for farmer inspection and guidance.
