County Bands Sought For September County Fair Program
The county fair entertainment committee seeks Dal ton and Lodge Pole bands to perform on Wednesday September 8 within the three day fair. They favor local bands and will pay each band a flat 25 dollar guarantee. Sidney’s band appears two days while Dalton and Lodge Pole may play one day. Horse racing purses total over 1200 dollars and more entertainment may be added.

The house appropriations committee listed many buildings nationwide for proposed construction under a 70 million dollar public building program. Treasury and Post Office will select projects, mostly post offices, from the recommended list. The third deficiency appropriation bill includes 23 million dollars for Public buildings. Immediate construction choices will be announced after congress acts. Roy Sanks Improves After Irrigation Well Injury
There was definite improvement yesterday in the condition of Roy Sanks who was seriously injured last Sunday when entangled in the gears of an irrigation well on his farm south of Sidney. Dr Roche said Sanks could take nourishment and had only a mild temperature, signs regarded as good. He remains weak from loss of blood and shock. no x rays were taken to check for fractures.

Pioneer Of Peetz Community Dies In Hospital Here
Frederick Emanuel Hoover 74 longtime Peetz district resident and former banker died Sunday morning in a Sidney hospital after a year of impaired health. Born August 4 1863 in Georgetown Colorado he married Minnie Chambers in 1884 at Nemaha. They later moved to Peetz where he helped organize Farmers State Bank and served as vice president until its sale in 1923. He is survived by his son and four others. Continuation noted on page 10.

Pheasant Season Set All Counties Open This Year
The state game commission fixed a ten day pheasant open season from October 17 to 26 and opened the entire state to pheasant shooting for the first time. New Challenger To Be Put In Service By U P
Union Pacific announces a full Challenger line between Chicago and San Francisco starting September with the original Los Angeles to Chicago service upgraded to aluminum coaches and new coffee shop dining cars. A San Francisco Challenger adds a coast train aligned with the Overland Limited while the latter becomes all Pullman. The trains include low cost meals, nurse and porter service, women and child coaches, air conditioning, a lounge car, and 68 seat dining cars.

Thompson Funeral Held in Sidney for Henry C Thompson
Funeral services for Henry Clinton Thompson 57 were conducted at Rice funeral home on Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Dwight Webster of the Methodist church officiating. Interment followed at Greenwood cemetery. A Michigan native, Thompson moved to Missouri as a youth, came to Nebraska in 1906 homesteading near Sidney, later settling eight miles south of town. He died last Sunday after a period of failing health. Surviving are four brothers Frank and George of Sidney James of Linnegan Mich and Elex of Cheyenne and one sister Mrs Ed Morris of Tracy California. Mrs Ed Ahrens and Mrs H W Ells provided songs at the service.

Hugo Players Bring Two Shows to Fox Theatre in Hugo
The Hugo players from Grand Island bring a three act comedy Puppy Love in the afternoon and the old favorite Trail of the Lonesome Pine in the evening to the Fox theatre next Wednesday August 25. Jack Winston and Stella Dallas headline with Harry Hugo as the comedian. The troupe, famed in Nebraska for 30 years, is ending a two week run at Scottsbluff before moving west of North Platte.

Pioneer Gurley Man Dies at 70 in Cheyenne County
Charles Neick, 70, longtime Cheyenne county resident, died Tuesday at Grover. Funeral services will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at Rice funeral home in Sidney with Rev Dwight Webster officiating. Interment in Greenwood. Born in Germany in 1867, he came to America at age ten, later moved to Illinois, then eastern Nebraska, and settled near Gurley 53 years ago. Survived by wife Emma Shelley Neick, three children Zelma Miles, Vernon Neick, Thurma Gibbins, and five grandchildren.

Scattered showers offered limited relief to corn in parts of the Panhandle this week but most of the crop remains drought stressed. Temperatures eased somewhat providing comfort to people and fields, yet the drought outlook barely improves. Much of the corn is beyond help though some severely damaged stands may recover with rain. Information on the new Nebraska drivers license law effective September 1 is provided by the Nebraska safety patrol director. Examinations are directed by the safety patrol and given by motor vehicles department employees. Applicants must bring their own vehicle or one they may operate. Operators licensed before September 1 must renew for 75 cents and pass a visual test. Vision requirements are 20 40 in both eyes and 50 percent acuity. loss of one eye requires 20 40 in the other eye. If vision fails, consult an optometrist. a corrected-vision certificate is needed for reexamination. Other physical deficiencies may require a driving test to determine license eligibility. Those without old licenses must undergo visual and written tests.
