First Schools In Nebraska and Tuition Beginnings
Records show the first Nebraska school began in 1822 at Fort Atkinson in present Washington County with Sgt Thompson Mumford teaching under Col Leavenworth. In the 1830s and 1840s missionary schools appeared near Bellevue, followed by pay schools after 1854 including Walnut Creek near Nebraska City where Margaret Martin opened a pay school in 1855, likely Nebraska Territory’s first.
