Wheat program payments to Cheyenne County farmers exceed 1.36 million dollars with 1,282,306.70 from marketing certificates and 79,201.18 for land diversion. About 1,175 of 1,461 farms participated in 1964 program. a meeting of state and county ASC officials is planned.
The ASC official said plans for the 1965 sign up and participation will be announced in detail soon. Farmers will be kept informed by the local ASC office on all terms and program facts, with a news release expected next week.
Nebraska marks 25th year as an oil producing state after 211 million barrels and 9,217 wells. H N Dusty Rhodes and Ken Monroe dig to expose Dannebrog’s 1889 dry hole on Oak Creek while recalling early gas flames and local oil fever. Oil drilling persists near Boelus and Richardson County records show ongoing exploration milestones.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce is informed of forming the Western Interstate 80 Association to promote the Chicago to San Francisco artery. Will coordinate across Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California with Quinn Johnson as president and Willard Murfin as executive director to raise funds and launch a nationwide travel promotion plan. Charter memberships set at $20 with a target annual budget of $35,000 and a plan for 4 color brochures and travel displays.
The Cheyenne County Fairgrounds introduces a new ticket office for the Fair Fort Sidney Days rodeos. Reserved seats will be sold at the Sidney Chamber of Commerce office until 5 p m Saturday, with advance sales moving to the new office from Sunday noon through Tuesday. Information line is 254 2493.
Festive events kick off this weekend as Cheyenne County Fair and Fort Sidney Days merge for a second year. A pre-Fair schedule runs events in 4-H, including the Light Horse Show on Saturday, the 4-H Style Revue, and cattle entries arriving Sunday. The Fort Sidney Days dance is set for Saturday night at the National Guard Armory with Jaycees in charge. A free barbecue with Potter Barbecue Club cooking and Lions Clubs serving follows at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
City officials announce an oiling program for park roads next week. Road south of the swimming pool and north of the ball park will receive an oil coat extending to the National Guard Armory area. National Guard and Radio Station KSD will contribute to costs. The north park entrance was recently oiled to reduce dust and improve appearance.
The Panhandle Players present Lily The Felon's Daughter at Jaycees Bandshell Legion Park with an 8 p.m. curtain. A smaller but enthusiastic crowd praised the three act melodrama and booed the villain while cheering the heroes amid a brief shower.
Five young gunmen on four horses rode into Sidney at about 5 pm and robbed Greenlee's Department Store on Tenth and Illinois, grabbing four money bags from beneath the counter. They fled amid gunfire, leaving customers stunned as one leader struggled to mount a horse. Local onlooker George Nickum fired warning shots from Snyder's Clothing during the wild scene.
Washington DC Brig Gen Donald G Grothaus, formerly chief of the U S Army Supply and Maintenance Agency in Europe, has been named Director of Supply at the U S Army Supply and Maintenance Command in Washington.
Route 27, closed for 13 miles for oil surfacing, is to open to traffic today. The contractor said final work was completed Monday. The road from Oshkosh to U S Route 30 east of Chappell is now surfaced and ready for use.

At 8 p.m. three RCA approved rodeos open, with Westernaires from Jefferson County plus about 200 cowboys, Clem McSpadden to announce, LeGrande brothers as clowns, Buetler and Son providing stock, and barrel racing for women. Sunday features Hillside Golf Tournament. Monday at the Fairgrounds hosts open class horse show, Old Timers, 4-H judging, showmanship contests, and a Fort Sidney Days parade at 5 p.m.
The Fair Board adds 600 spectator bleachers on the north side of the rodeo arena and opens a five window ticket office on the Midway from noon to performance daily. Reserved grandstand seats are now sold to guarantee good seating. Carnival attractions and Midway refreshment stands will be available, aiming for a memorable celebration with better parking and seating.
Fort Sidney Days committee sponsors Kids Day with a 10 a.m. parade and a 12:30 p.m. movie at the Fox followed by 3 p.m. games in front of the grandstand. Cash prizes go to race and contest winners. Wednesday August 12 is 4-H Day highlighting members and leaders with a 1 p.m. cattle hogs and sheep sale and a 4 p.m. watermelon feed. At 7 p.m. the 4-H livestock parade and Style Show precede the grandstand exhibits release.
Sidney Telegraph announces its annual Back-to-School edition next Wednesday detailing school openings for Sidney and surrounding territory. Superintendents who have not replied to prior information requests are urged to respond immediately.
Fair to night and Saturday with a low near 60 and a high around 90. Five day outlook shows temperatures 2 to 5 degrees above normal through Wednesday with highs 90 to 95 and lows 60 to 65. Widely scattered late afternoon thundershowers are expected through the period.
