County fair preparations heat up with 4-H events including Music Identification and Song Contest. Girls’ home economics judging, Clean Up Day, and meetings for livestock sale, Junior Fair Board, and agricultural superintendents fill the schedule. Demonstrations and Style Revue follow, with Light Horse Show and 4-H clothing judging on Saturday. Fort Sidney Days dance caps the eve.
The Clover Leaf Drovers and the Sidney Wranglers host a Saturday morning show at the Fairgrounds arena with 4-H youth ages 9 to 16 competing in senior and junior divisions for grand showmanship and all around trophies. Judge Gene Mitchell, assisted by club leaders, will oversee halter, reining, pleasure, polebending, barrel racing, and a Shetland pony contest. Open class follows Monday with halter and reining events and best all around and grand champion awards.
World champion Guy Weeks of Abilene headlining early entry list for Sidney Rodeo set Sunday through Tuesday August 9 to 11. Prize money at stake surpasses last year’s 4885 share. notable entrants include C. R. Boucher and Carl Nafzger. Rodeo boosts RCA standings as 582 rodeos grossed 3.5 million in 1963. Finals return December at the National Finals Rodeo in Los Angeles. Bucking stock supplied by Ella Buetler & Son of Elk City Oklahoma.
The 1964 Cheyenne County Fair premium list appears in The Sidney Telegraph. The fair runs from August 9 to August 12. Cleanup at the fairgrounds began this morning as workers prepared the site for the big show. Exhibitors should review the premium list today and submit entries promptly.
Two new oil discoveries in Scotts Bluff and Banner counties spark exploration. Banner Oil Co. drilled the Hessler No. 1 wildcat eight miles east and 3/4 mile north of Scottsbluff, near a prior find. Regal Drilling Co. struck the No. 1 Henderson near the Canal Field in Scotts Bluff County.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce surveys candidates for a new manager. A three man committee led by Ken Noteboom with Leo Krieger and Lew Mehling conducts interviews. They expect about one more month before notifying the board of directors.
Westernaires of Jefferson County Colorado will headline a three night rodeo at the Cheyenne County Fair Fort Sidney Days. The group started in 1949 with 36 youths and now includes over 500 riders ages 9 through 18 with more than 100 volunteer instructors. They are internationally known for precise riding and assist other youth programs nationwide.
Western Nebraska faces a hot July and scarce rain, threatening dryland feed grain like millet. Scattered showers partially aid crops while Brownson-Potter rains wash out fields. Irrigated crops endure the heat but dryland crops wait for relief as August forecasts offer little hope.
Reserved seat tickets for three rodeo performances at the Cheyenne County Fair Fort Sidney Days are on advance sale this week at the Chamber of Commerce office. This Saturday Sub-Dels take charge instead of secretary Lois Ritz. Tickets on sale from noon at the fairgrounds ticket office by the gramistand.
Panhandle area: clear to partly cloudy this afternoon tonight and Tuesday with a few after noon thundershowers. Lows near 60 highs around 90. Five day outlook shows temperatures about a few degrees above normal with highs 90 to 95 and lows 60 to 65. Widely scattered after noon and evening showers continuing through Saturday.
Tele graph listed Lillie, The Felon's Daughter as August 7 and 8. Actual performances are this Thursday and Friday nights August 6 and 7, reflecting updated scheduling for the Panhandle Players.
Helen Theresa Powell a Sidney resident died at Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at St. Patrick's Church with burial in Julesburg Cemetery. Rosary will be recited Monday at Gehrig & Son Funeral Home. Powell is survived by her husband Gene and daughter Lois Jane, plus her parents siblings and other relatives.
Funeral Tuesday for three week old Richard Lee Tharne found dead in his crib at his parents home 1908 3rd. Survivors are Mr. and Mrs. Hal Richard Tharne and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Hershel Goen Sidney and Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Murray Fremont. Rev Jess Farrow Calvary Baptist Church will officiate. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery with Gehrig & Son Funeral Home in charge.
The Action Agency of North Platte reports two motel sales in Sidney. The Roundup Motel on east Highway 30 sold to Mr and Mrs Russell Fletcher from Mr and Mrs Lloyd Spencer. Fletcher works at Western Drug. The Ranch Motel on Highway 30 sold by Ernest Parkes to Mr and Mrs Lloyd Wamsley and Mr and Mrs Tom Haas of Norfolk.
Patrolman Sanford Butcher of the Sidney police force sustained a painful but not serious bite Sunday evening when a dog, just run over by a car, grabbed his hand. Butcher said he intended to take the dog to a veterinarian and noted the animal had just been shot for rabies.
An improving cattle market was seen at the Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion with 400 head sold. Cows sold stronger from 10.70 to 15, steer calves from Crow Bros. reached 23.40, heavies 21, white face steers 530 pounds averaged 19.80, market appears firm. A special sale is planned Aug 15, with 4-H fat calf effort urged to boost future bids. Nebraska feeders cautious optimism, July 1 cattle on feed reports show declines in several regions.
Frontier Airlines will keep Sidney on its southern Nebraska route with only minor impact on travel efficiency. The Civil Aeronautics Board recommended dropping the Denver to North Platte shuttle, routing passengers via McCook, Kearney, Hastings and Lincoln to Omaha and via Lincoln and Hastings to Denver. A two year trial of the new plan will begin after formal CAB approval, with an arbitrary five passenger per day quota.
Phil Gottschalk became majority owner of The Telegraph Printing Co. on July 1 and is now on the job in Sidney. He will spend four to five days weekly there as he and his wife begin disposing of holdings in Nebraska. He will solicit advertising and manage commercial printing while Mrs. Gottschalk runs newspapers at Rushville and Hay Springs.
