Too Much Water Will Hurt Beets

Excessive irrigation lowers beet yields by leaching nutrients and causing poor soil conditions. University of Nebraska irrigation expert H. R. Mulliner provides guidelines: optimal moisture removal before irrigation, total 20-25 inches needed for 18-20 ton beets, and most water absorbed from the top two feet with limited value below three feet. Beets demand moisture through the growing season, peak use in August, and more frequent lighter irrigation than corn due to shallow roots. Irrigation timing has little effect on sugar percentage. nitrogen factors play a larger role.
