Sioux Ordnance Depot posted a payroll of 4,303,000 for the year July 1961 to June 1962, per Col. Stanley W. Smiley. Payroll accounted for 70 percent of the 6,103,000 required to run the Panhandle area’s largest industry, with costs broken out as 4,303,000 in payroll, 1,041,000 transportation, 471,000 supplies and equipment, 168,000 contracts and services, and 120,000 in utilities.

E B Bernie Miller aged 76 died of a heart attack at Memorial Hospital after weeks of illness and recent surgery. Vandalism on Farms Reported to Sheriff
The sheriff reports two cases of vandalism on farms south of Sunol and east of Sidney Charles Helfrich who farms two miles south of Sunol. Vandals cut and removed an eight foot fence section letting cattle wander. Art Nelson reports vandals left a gate open allowing cattle to run free.

Sidney Volunteer Fire Depart reports only one fire call in July due to wet weather. Chief Harvey Vizina notes last year had 32 calls in July, mainly for wheat and grass blazes. The sole call occurred on July 13 when a 1956 Ford owned by Dennis Komer of Larnard, Kansas, caught fire.

Two traffic mishaps were reported by Sidney Police on Wednesday. First, at 3:25 p.m. on 17th Avenue 75 feet south of Ilinois, a 1953 Chevrolet driven by Taft E. Clark struck the left fender of a parked 1962 Oldsmobile owned by Frieda M. Bauer, with minor damages expected. The second occurred about 6:50 p.m. on Illinois between 9th and 10th, a hit and run that scraped a 1952 International Carryall owned by Elmer H. Ritz. damages were estimated at 315.

Five Sheep Killed By Truck Near Dalton
Five sheep owned by Frank Gillespie were killed Sunday night about 7 p.m. when a 1961 GMC pickup driven by Steve Hopkins Jr. struck them on a county road six miles east and two north of Dalton. Trooper Del Shipley said the sheep darted from the ditch and Hopkins could not stop in time.
