Sprinkler irrigation spreads on Lodgepole Valley farms as water sources, banks, and Wheatbelt Public Power District push tests. Success varies with underground supplies, but where reliable wells exist the system boosts crop production including feed grains beans.
The upcoming construction of Interstate 80 across Nebraska will boost growth in Sidney and Cheyenne County through 1973 and into 1974 with new families and temporary residents. Contracts cover Lodgepole to Sunol in 1971, Sunol to Sidney in early 1972, and Brownson to Sidney by 1973, bringing millions to the region and spurring motel, service station, and truck stop development along key interchanges.
The Sidney utilities department will spend about 500000 to upgrade the electric system and add facilities to buy and distribute power from the Bureau of Reclamation. A new substation west of town will link to the Bureau station north of Sidney and upgrade the distribution network for higher voltages to meet growing residential, commercial, and industrial demand.
Cheyenne County commissioners plan a 1970 road maintenance and construction program costing more than 500000. The county highway engineer recommended the plan and includes additional hard surfacing near Lodgepole along with bridge work and farm to market road maintenance. A public road hearing will be held to explain the program.
