National Farmers Union president Tony Dechant told Cheyenne County farmers in Sidney that the Nix on Administration aims to fleece farmers. He argued lowering loan rates will depress markets, harm livestock, and urged support for the Coal it ion Farm Bill while criticizing White House influence. Elton Burke attended the meeting.
The Panhandle forecast calls for fair skies this afternoon tonight and Tuesday morning with increasing clouds Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures range 60 to 70, with lows 30 to 40. Rain chances near zero. extended outlook shows possible showers or snow Wednesday, then mostly fair Thursday and Friday with cooler midweek and warmer end of week. William J. Sutton, 70, of Julesburg Colorado, a former Bridgeport resident, died Saturday in Julesburg. Born April 24, 1899, at Newkirk Oklahoma, he married Mollie Fertig in 1948 and lived in Morris before moving to Bridgeport where he worked at the Sioux Ordinance Depot. He later married Bertha Weems in 1958, and they ran the Manor Motel in Julesburg until her death in 1968. Surviving are a sister and four brothers. three sisters and one brother preceded him in death. Funeral at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Assembly of God Church in Bridgeport. Burial in Oregon Trail Cemetery. Holewiek Funeral Home in Bridgeport in charge.
Voters will elect one man and one woman from each grade to serve a one year term on the 1970 71 Advisory Council at the Spring Parents Night beginning at 7 p.m. in the junior and senior high schools. Science fairs woodworking shows and orientation programs accompany the event with a dangerous drugs program at 8 15 p.m. in the senior high auditorium.
Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church for Ralph James Truax 62 a retired Union Pacific section foreman who died Sunday morning at Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. He was born June 4 1907 in Independence Kansas and lived in Sidney later moving from Brownson to Sidney. Surviving are his widow two sons a daughter seven grandchildren two sisters and one brother.
Edward R. Waite 74 of Lodgepole dies Saturday at Memorial Hospital. Tuesday service at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Lodgepole with Pastor Raymond Thiel. burial in Greenwood Cemetery Sidney. During March, 157 families participated in the food stamp program in Cheyenne County. Forty four were public assistance cases and 113 were non public assistance. The total value of issued coupons was 12099 dollars. Certification continues at the Cheyenne County Welfare Department and appointments can be made by phone.Starting with April, sale days shift to the second and fourth Thursdays. Elaborate plans are in place for the Industrial Arts Fair at Western Vocational Technical School from April 29 to May 2. Merle Rudebusch says students from the Panhandle will compete, with judging on April 30 and public viewing on April 30 evening through May 1. Awards, including a state entrant, will be announced May 2 as booths showcase every type of industrial arts project.
The Adult Education Association of Nebraska will hold its annual convention at Nebraska Western College from 1 p.m. Friday April 10 to 1 p.m. Saturday April 21. Several breakin attempts were reported to Sidney Police at the J C Penney Co Store and Sidney High School. A glass cutter was used to break near door locks but entry was not secured and only minor damage occurred.
Sidney police investigated two accidents on Saturday. The first occurred at 7 45 a m at the intersection of 16th and Maple when Mrs Arthur Holt’s southbound car was struck by Vincent Phillips driving eastbound on Maple. Damage was about 90 dollars to the Holt auto and 60 dollars to the Phillips car. Later at 2 35 p m Carolyn Holly pulled into her driveway on Rancho and struck Patricia Meyers’s car, causing about 100 dollars damage to the Holly vehicle with no damage to Meyers’s auto.
Alliance will host the Sixth District NSAA music contest with two days of performances. Class B and D schools perform April 23, followed by Class A and C on April 24. Judges include Frank Baird, Charles Seltenrich, Howard Mickens, Milo Winter, Donald Carey, Dr. Eugene Hilligoss, and Dr. Arthur Birkby. Contest director is Leslie T. Chamberlin. coordinators are Tom Bibbey, William Neergaard and John Cundy. Participating B and D schools span Rushville to Sidney St. Patrick’s. A schools include Chappell to Alliance St. Agnes.
Nebraska State Patrol reports a weekend of accidents with heavy damage and injuries. A 1963 Chevrolet struck a Wheatbelt pole in Dalton causing $25 pole damage and $500 car damage. no injuries. Three California runaways hitchhiked with a Sidney driver and were detained for families. A 1967 Chevrolet rolled into a borrow pit near Potter injuring two, with $750 damage. A Sidney youth escaped serious injury in a one car rollover east of Sidney with $200 damage.
Rotary International District 563 wrapped up in Sidney with Dr. Hull A. Cook presiding. Milan Bish of Grand Island was elected District Governor and Don Potts of Grant District Governor-Elect, with RI President's rep William R. Robbins and Dr. Frank A. Court of Denver delivering talks.
The Timely Topics 4-H public speaking contest will be at 7 30 p m Tuesday in the 4 H building. The public is invited to attend. Winners will be named in both the junior and senior divisions. The senior division winner will compete in the district contest in Bridgeport this Saturday.
