Veterans of Foreign Wars origins and mission in early America
Three Spanish American War veterans organized the first VFW units to aid comrades facing hardship after war. They fought neglect at home, formed the Gold Chevron society, and built a nationwide network of posts and auxiliaries. The VFW influenced legislation and supported veterans from World War I to II, preserving freedom and welfare.
