Memorial Day ceremonies mark Shepherd events and youth baseball
In Shepherd the Memorial Day ceremonies were led by the Joe Ulsh Post 8215 Veterans of Foreign Wars with a drill team parade. The Auxiliary 8215 and Shepherd High School Band followed, joined by car-provided Auxiliary units. Scout groups attended as Pastor Forrest Rhoades spoke, and Taps closed the services at village park and cemetery. The summer Recreation Program expands to baseball for high school age boys with Pony League to continue under Coach John Harris. more details to follow.

Bond Issue for School Operations Faces Voters
Voters on June 8 decide on a 770000 bond issue and three mill operation tax for five years. School officials say the funds would add teachers and special classes, improve teaching aids, expand the high school curriculum, and provide needed equipment.
Former Resident Joins Defense Fuel Center in D C
Patricia Ann Lau, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Lau of 126 N Chippewa St, has joined the Defense Fuel Supply Center in Washington DC, an agency of the Defense Supply Agency. A Shepherd High School graduate, she previously worked for an insurance agency in Saginaw and started government service last December with the Army Security Agency in Arlington VA.

Dan Jerome Named Head Of Sugar Bush Activities For Next Season
The Shepherd Sugar Bush Corp held its annual meeting at the William Hackett residence on May 20 electing Dan Jerome as President with Martin Coughlin as Vice President Newell Oren as Treasurer and Leota Cline as Secretary. A 14 member Board of Directors includes Jerome Coughlin Oren Hackett and Cline among others. The group approved a ten percent note payment from this year's income which totaled 4525 50 from syrup sales plus festival and contributions and over 3000 will be added to the swimming pool fund toward eventual construction as a community memorial.

Mrs Caroline Homeyer to Retire From Shepherd Faculty
Mrs Caroline Homeyer will retire from Shepherd Public Schools effective at term end June 3 1964 after seven years in the district This marks her second retirement following a ten year break from 1946 to 1957 She is a Pontiac High School alumna class of 1921 and later earned her degree at Eastern Michigan Ypsilanti After teaching in Berkley and Dearborn she began her final term in Shepherd and previously retired temporarily in 1947

Hill-Burton Funds Approved for Isabella County Facility
Isabella County will receive 385000 in Hill-Burton funds to construct a new medical care facility in Mt. Pleasant. The grant was confirmed by a telegram from Senators Hart and McNamara to County Welfare Director Maynard Cole stating the Public Health Service approved the grant.
