Kern Academy A historic Adventist school founded in 1916
The Kern Academy began in 1916 with eight Adventist families educating 22 children. Early teachers included Mrs. Clara Weishaar and Isaac Schneider. The school evolved to a Junior Academy by 1923, 12 grades by 1930, added a music department in 1932 and a cafeteria in 1934. Today about 430 students are enrolled with a large staff, and many alumni became doctors ministers nurses and missionaries.

Jerry Mathis, 20, a junior NROTC student at Stanford, helped the Cardinal shell defeat USC by six lengths in Long Beach Saturday afternoon. He is the son of Mrs. Ida Mathis of Shafter, a Richland Primary School teacher.

Teacher Takes Charge At Poplar School In 1927
In January 1927 Mrs. Ethel Livers began teaching the lower grades at Poplar School where 40 pupils were enrolled. The school was regarded as one of the best small country schools in Kern County.

By October 1936 the San Joaquin Valley had 91,500 developed acres. Shafter’s potato yield that year was twice the state average. By 1939 California housed 68,000 acres planted with spuds.

Stone Family History Tracks Town Growth and Potato Roots
Mr and Mrs Woods Stone trace the towns growth from 1915 when the Stone family moved from Alpaugh California to a potato rich area. Early settlers include J C and C C Duerksen E V Kattenhorn Judge Manuel S C Haller and others. Potatoes began in 1914 with three acres on Leach Caldwell tract, sold at 1.10 per hundred. By 1916 Stone planted 10 acres yielding 150 sacks per acre. Weyl Zuckerman was among the early buyers. Social life grew around Adventist worship at Maple Schoolhouse and Wasco trips for church activities.
