The Wasco Chamber of Commerce defeated Shafter Chamber 8 spuds to 6 in a humorous four man donkey race at the Shafter Potato Festival held in the County Park about 5:15 p.m. The Wasco team included Reed Hastings Clayton Stewart Charles Hugo and Horace G Brooks. The Shafter team featured Johnny Gaede Bill Gunnarson Roy Duerksen and Phil Clarkin.

Council Discusses Adeolph-Kirschenmann Street Plan Change
Last night the Adeolph-Kirschenmann council debated street construction changes on Shafter avenue. A motion to eliminate sidewalks on the west side between west Orange and Stone avenues passed after Earl Johnson seconded. A June 13 hearing was set for residents to show cause. Frank Russell also moved to discuss Project No. 16 specifications. The widening of Shafter avenue between Lerdo and Stone on the east and Lerdo and Ash on the west was reviewed along with curbs culverts gutters and materials. A bid from a former street contractor was declared null due to lapse of time and changed specs. (Continued on Page Five)

More than twenty thousand people witnessed Shafter’s second annual potato festival over a weekend. Johnny Mack Brown headlined the event with a parade of 100 entries, 1000 participants, and dozens of horses, followed by a barbecue at County Park. Awards went to winners in floats and horse divisions. judges included Ray Hosking and Mert Weatherwax.

Lawson Fore of Hollywood was named high point winner at the two day Shafter Potato Festival R C A Rodeo. He won the Grand Cup as the best all around cowboy.
