The American Legion Auxiliary sponsored the Americanism essay contest with prizes awarded by chairwoman Mrs. Jack Hare. In the 7th to 9th grade group Felipe Alcola freshman won first prize and $300. Anna Fay Duggan and Donha Weitz took second and third. In the 10th to 12th grade group Patsy Kelly won first prize $3. Doris Lees second prize $2 and Bertram Fuller third with a merit certificate. Potato Race on Donkeys Highlights Festival Parade

Shafter High Generals and East Bakersfield base ball varsity played to a 20 to 20 tie amid a dust storm that cut visibility to zero. Long-Time Shafter Resident Succumbs After Illness
Ramona Lara Araiza, 25, died May 16 in Santa Ana after five months of illness. She lived in Shafter twenty years, survived by husband David Araiza, children Linda, Joe, Frank, Harvey, Cruz, and sister Vera Laar, all of Shafter. Body returned to Shafter for burial. Falla the bloodhound, praised as one of the region’s best, aided by his trainer Jack Manweiler, helped recapture two Mexican nationals fleeing federal immigration authorities. The men were part of a larger group of about 200 laborers contracted by Baumel and Kurtz to harvest onions at the Co. R. Codd Ranch northwest of town.
