In June 1938 Fern County saw a major advance in sugar beet farming as ammonium sulfate fertilizer raised tonnage by 400 percent at the Phil Ohanneson ranch near Shafter, marking a significant improvement in experimental plantings.
The Shafter Press front page reports no truth to circulating rumors that a woman's body was unearthed on a ranch near Maple Hollow. Constable Reily stated there is no basis to the tale and dismissed the speculation across the district.
The May 1938 meeting of the Business Men's Association, now the Chamber of Commerce, elected Dr. L. H. McGrane as president replacing Norval Fair and named Ernest Panero secretary after A. R. Tuehren vacated the post.
Doctor Jack A. Lighthill announces the coming opening of his medical office in one of the new Midgley residences on Sunset Avenue after construction, scheduled for May 4, 1938.
Former Shafter postmistress Les Rosenstiel writes to her mother Alma Partridge of Wasco about Okinawa where her husband Captain James Rosenstiel serves with U S Army occupation forces. The Saturday Evening Post photographer photographed the Rosenstiel garden noted for its bright flowers and hard work in soil of red clay. The couple support local island women’s clubs by supplying cloth for home economics classes though sewing supplies are scarce. The Rosenstiels employ two servants and hosted a birthday party for a local girl with cake and costume jewelry. She describes Okinawa as a vacation island near the China Sea and Pacific with a naval recreation base, several orphanages, a hospital, and homes, with plans to learn Japanese before return to the United States.
In December 1931 Robert Neuman topped local farmers with the largest onion acreage. Also planting sizable plots were Chris and F. W. Handel, among other growers noted for their substantial onion commitments.
Al Eckmann, longtime Shafter resident since 1918, organized Boy Scout Troop Mu 41 in 1922 and served as Scout Master until 1927. Early troop members included Art Regier Raicit Porter Donald Wedge Fred Manuel Elmer Goertz Edwin Bowman Harry Gardner Nick Riloff Donald McClain and Reynold Duehren. After WWII era exchange, William Lachenmaer, a Shafter city councilman and farmer, was named president of the Shafter Exchange Club at Cafe Newman on October 4 1938, with Glenn Nay as vice president Bob Neuman sergeant at arms and Ernest Panero as secretary treasurer.
The 20 30 club held a Wednesday evening meeting at Cawelo to discuss the Shafter Potato Festival. Ivan Myers reported on the club float for Saturday’s parade featuring a team of mules pulling a prairie schooner. Ed DeMello noted parking for the Rodeo west of the High School with club volunteers in charge. Admission is twenty five cents. Merwin Schirmer urged speeding up raffles ticket sales.
At the June 13 1938 meeting Roy Pasley received a tentative contract to collect garbage. Rates set include 60 cents per month for households, 30 cents for apartment houses, and business rates from one to five dollars depending on amount hauled.

The Shafter High School annual Senior Banquet at the Canelo Motel starts 7:00 p.m. with James Crabb presiding. Louise Jenkins provides piano background, Joyce Morris sings, and remarks from Principal Jack M. Hill and James Wilson conclude the event. The Junior Prom follows at 8:30 p.m. in the new cafeteria with theme Melody Time and Perry Johnson and his orchestra playing.
