Shafter prepares for its annual two day Potato Festival highlighted by a parade longer than the Pasadena Rose Parade, an RCA sanctioned rodeo, a glider meet, a large barbecue, a festival dance, an aquatic show, and potato related races as thousands of visitors are welcomed to town.
Run second in a $3,000 claiming seven furlong race at Santa Anita. Jockey Shoe maker rode the three year old. Owned by Mrs. Henry A. Guidera of Shafter.
County Park hosts two day Potato Festival concessions along California Avenue Santa Fe and Sunset in three booths. Kiwanis sells soft drinks and popcorn, Veteran Farmer booth offers soft drinks, Baptist stand features religious theme, dunking game on Santa Fe, Catholic Altar Society serves soft drinks on Sunset, Mexican Colony Church offers Mexican food on James Street, and the Potato Festival Barbecue center hosts Legion Auxiliary coffee and donuts.
The program outlines Saturday and Sunday rodeo events including bareback riding calf roping saddle bronc riding and trick riding by Montie and Louise Montana. World champion cow boy Gene Rambo to join calf roping and team roping with stock by Wilfred Cline. Judges Johnny McFarlane and Gene Rambo. program subject to change.
The program lists a first massed flight with five toe ships and twelve sailplanes at 1500 feet, plus 20 to 30 minutes of exhibition aerobatics. Bud Kimball flies the Australian pursuit ship and features include a world loop-record attempt and a slow graceful display in My Baby. Mauri Lind leads the Kern County Soaring Society in the loop record bid aboard Baby Alba.
The Bakersfield Aquanettes highlight the Shafter Potato Festival Aquacade at Richland Aquatic Center Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Roy Farrell lists Richland and area high school events including 50 and 100 yard sprints and medleys, diving exhibitions, musical Aqua race acts, clown diving, and a post-show reception at Richland school cafeteria.
A two day holiday miniature carnival for children opens in Shafter near County Park. Train rides, airplane trips, kiddy cars, donkey cars, pony rides and snapshots await youngsters. C. R. Benson of McFarland and H. T. Pollard of Bakersfield organize the event across from the County Park. Children pay 9 cents.
Official prices for the two day Shafter Potato Festival list parade free to all. Barbecue costs 1.00 entitles all you can eat. Aquacade free to everyone. Dance 1.20 per couple. Glider Show 0.90 for adults and free for children under 16. Rodeo reserve 2.40 general 1.50 and kids under 12 0.60.
Shafter Chamber and Wasco group members will race donkeys Saturday at 5 15 PM as part of the Potato Festival. The event on Sunset Street near County Park and Fire Department will follow the Rodeo with a trophy for the winning team.
Several Kern County firms contributed beef at no charge for the Potato Festival Barbecue to be served at Saturday noon. Contributors include L. A. Camp Co, Kern County Land Co, Kern Valley Packing Co, Em H Mettler & Sons, Tejon Ranch, and Coberly West Ginning Co.
Betty Receives standing at Betty Afferty's Cleaners and Paula Schirmer invited to visit Wednesday.Thursday morning Betty appointed official hat doffer for Cliff McGraw the rodeo promoter. Cliff injured his right paw and faces a tough weekend riding in the rodeo with Betty in the balance.
Floats gather at Richland Primary School between Lerdo and Wall. At 10 30 the parade travels east on Lerdo to Five Points then northeast on Central to Santa Fe. It turns south on Santa Fe to Lerdo then right to Shafter Avenue and Orange Street back to the start.
The Shafter Setso Festival Parade will start at Richland Primary School Saturday at 10 30. East and west traffic will be blocked, with intermittent north and south flow. 4 West Ash and West Orange streets will be closed all day toward James.
Shafter culinary artists and makers prepare for a Friday morning food exhibition and judging event. Entrants compete with potato dishes and other prepared foods as the exhibition opens at 10:00 a.m. with judging starting at 10:30 a.m.
The Shafter Potato Festival launches with Kern County's largest parade at 10 30 a m Saturday. The schedule lists entrants from Shafter Wasco and Bakersfield groups including the Kern County Chamber of Commerce Shafter City Council and American Legion units, with a rodeo and glider meet following on Sunday.
