The Kern mosquito abatement district uses oil insecticides growth inhibitors and natural predators like gambusia to curb larvae. Gambusia were imported in the early 1900s and now breed in Valley areas. they’re moved from district HQ to breeding grounds as needed. The program faces insecticide resistance and bans on certain chemicals, prompting experimental altoloid use. The district, started 1917, now covers 1300 square miles, with Shafter and Buttonwillow added since 1946 and 1956. Costs rise from nine cents per acre in 1960 to an estimated $1.50–$2 per acre this year.
