Council Winners Elected In Shafter Election
Elmer Unruh and Robert Millwee won the city council seats amid a six candidate field. Incumbents J M Banks and G H Grundy thanked voters as Grundy ends a 24 year council career and plans to stay active with the Potato and Cotton Festival in May. Banks lauded the winners and continues festival work with Kiwanis and American Legion groups. Dr Max Tudor, Shafter High School graduate and Madrid headmaster, sent greetings from Spain where he teaches at the American School in Madrid amid a diverse student body.

Rain Sets Season Record in Shafter Weather
Shafter received just under an inch of rain over two days last week setting a season record. 84 of an inch fell Friday morning and .15 in the following 24 hours with Friday’s high at 43 degrees the lowest since December 10. Pat Kelly is highlighted as a Kern County Republican leader and honored for lifelong public service.

Shafter officials debated selling a county parking lot next to the courthouse while preserving a central flower bed. Kern High School District official Dr. Herb Neufeld earned a doctoral degree in education administration from Brigham Young University in February. He joined the district in 1965 after prior roles at Shafter High and Foothill High School. He holds degrees from Fresno State and serves in multiple professional and community groups in Bakersfield.

The vibrating Shaker trucks return to Shafter after poor data from the first sweep. They will run between 8 and 9 p m at Lerdo Highway near the railroad tracks and the primary school. Residents are told vibrations are not earthquakes but four trucks shaking the ground.

99 Freeway Grooving Project Planned in California
CALTRANS bids call for grooving concrete on three sections of Route 99 in Kern and Tulare counties to improve traction and hydroplaning resistance. Work covers Panama Lane to Belle Terrace near Bakersfield, Lerdo Highway area, and Avenue 152 to Airport crossing near Tipton. Bids open April 3 in Sacramento with about 84 000 dollars allocated for the project.
