Abandoned Standard Oil Well Sealed After Deep Rework
An attempt to seal seepage at the Standard Oil wildcat 181 south of Shafter succeeded this week as equipment was removed. The well was redrilled to about 2000 feet with cement pumped into the hole producing a complete water shutoff and abandonment. A 76 foot derrick stood over the site for three weeks as gas pressure brought mud and water to the surface. original depth was near 11000 feet, but the hole was abandoned after drill pipe was lost and fishing failed.
