Eighty percent of Shafter residents paid the first installment before the December 5 deadline per city clerk Frank Shaw. An eight percent penalty will be added for delinquents, with notices to be mailed this week. The council voiced satisfaction with the civic response. this was the first levy since incorporation.

Cotton growers across the nation will vote Saturday on marketing quotas for 1939 with the American Legion hall in Shafter as polling place. A two thirds majority is needed to implement quotas which set an acreage allotment and tax on excess cotton. Three Die In Car Crash Near Shafter Airport
Three men died after a head on collision one mile south of Shafter airport on Santa Fe Way at 1 a m Sunday. Theodore Unruh 21 of Rio Bravo Arnold Aguilar 23 and Heriberto Hinojosa 29 residents of the Shafter district died later at Kern General hospital. Surviving passenger Fineda 26 was in critical condition at Kern General hospital. Funeral services for Unruh were held at the First Mennonite church and for Aguilar and Hinojosa at the Baptist church in the Mexican colony south of Shafter. The cause remains undetermined though investigators suspect driver confusion from approaching lights.

Albert Godfrey Buried Alive at Kern Mine
Albert Godfrey 45 a former Shafter resident was killed in a landslide on a Kern river mining claim six miles above the canyon mouth. His body lay about 18 hours within 100 feet of the Bakersfield Kernville highway before partner J W Wilson found him. He had worked in potatoes in Shafter and later guarded at John Maurer shed then mined near Kernville. The accident time, estimated after 4 p m Saturday, was set by Coroner Houze.

City Council to Discuss Shafter Sidewalks and Zoning

The Shafter Wasco Irrigation District board set January 18 as a tentative date for a 7:30 P.M. public meeting at Richland auditorium to review district activities since formation and plan for the future. About 25 farmers and a six-member land owner committee attended and asked for prepared answers to questions, with emphasis on data from water spreading experiments and possible exemptions on current assessments. Gerald Jones of the state engineer’s office gave a progress report on the Central Valley project as attendees discussed veterans exemptions and benefit-based assessments.

J C Siemens of Shafter was elected second vice president of the newly formed Kern county junior chamber of commerce at a Bakersfield meeting. A G Hardy of Wasco presided, Baldwin of Bakersfield was treasurer, and a bylaws committee approved a constitution and by laws. Starch Plant Plan For Potatoes In Rosedale Faces Delays
Local potato men report no new developments on a starch factory project in Rosedale to process surplus and culled potatoes from Shafter. Promoters B H McKinnon and Charles P Martin may speak at a future Business Men's association meeting.
