Union Oil 7 34 well in the Shafter field drilled 900 feet in the week and was below 9400 feet on Tuesday as crews push toward a new deep drilling speed record. Spudded November 18, 9 400 feet reached after 27 days of drilling with usual completion times 60 to 75 days, suggesting a record pace if maintained. The 734 well is the sole Union project and no new locations are expected before year end.

Maple School Dedication Marks 65 000 Cost

Driver Hits Christmas Tree and Receives 30 Days
Marlin Chaffin 22 of Smith's Corner pleaded guilty to drunk driving after he struck the Central avenue Christmas tree and damaged street decorations. He received 30 days in the county road camp and a suspended 60 day sentence. William Wells, also of Smith's Corner and a passenger, pled guilty to intoxication, paid a $30 fine and got 30 days suspended jail. Chaffin had earlier fought Robert E Lee Giboney. Giboney received 15 days in county jail.

Plans for a community Christmas party on December 23 for local children progress well as Richland grammar school accepts invitations. Richland P.T.A. voted 30 toward the party fund and gift bags will be prepared December 22 in the school lunch room. Santa Claus is rumored to attend and local schools will escort children to the theatre with transportation arranged for country pupils. Popular Minister Resigns Shafter Church Post
Rev. Wm. J. Bestwater resigned as minister of the Mennonite Brethren Church in Shafter at a church meeting. He will remain until a successor is called. Since arriving in 1931 from Herbert Saskatchewan he led growth to almost 400 members and oversaw the completion of a modern church building in 1937. The Bestwaters will continue to reside in Shafter.
