Early Ostrich Industry Takes Root in Kern City
Eugene Burmeister recounts Mrs. Fanny Tracy pioneering ostrich farming in Bakersfield by 1910, building a 174-strong herd on Chester Lane and earning the title Buttonwillow Bird Lady. Other investors from Tejon Ranch joined, supplying plumes for Fifth Avenue fashion. The Arizona herd sale to Tejon sparked a decade of ranch disruption, ranch hands, cattle, and horses. Ostrich behavior proved temperamental, with birds challenging fences and occasional bull-themed escapes. Ranch operations involved clipping plumes via cattle chute and head blindfolds, egg production averaging 22 per hen in the first year amid early chick rearing challenges.
