Turkish government hunts kidnappers of Israeli consul in Istanbul

Turkish authorities arrest about 200 left wing suspects as they pursue the abductors of Ephraim Elrom, the Israeli consul in Istanbul. A note threats his execution if jailed guerrillas are not freed by 5 pm Thursday, while a new anti kidnapping law is promised. Elrom, 60, was seized at his apartment after masked gunmen killed a guard and bound residents. His wife is hospitalized in shock as the country braces under martial law and a march toward public security actions. Descriptions tie the abductors to the Turkish People’s Liberation Army, with links to Arab guerrilla groups against Israel. Elrom, born in Poland, had earlier served as Eichmann’s interrogator.
