UPI reports U S air power precedes a long delayed assault by South Vietnamese forces into the A Shau Valley 35 miles from Hue. The objective is to neutralize anti aircraft guns as Bo2s strike ahead of the infantry. Government and US officials note Communist forces are prepared to fight and have established a base camp three miles northeast of the valley.
The House Ways and Means Committee voted 13 ? to approve a 5 percent increase in Social Security benefits for retirees disabled and widows effective June 1 1972 with higher checks beginning July 1972 The plan also revises the welfare program and may reach the House floor in weeks In another item TRAC halted monthly background briefings for newsmen citing waning interest at Long Binh Vietnam U S Army officials said the step was taken to cut unmatched briefings.
Rail signalmen walkout shuts down lines nationwide forcing Nixon to seek emergency legislation to extend negotiations to July. He urged Congress to halt the stoppage with a passable resolution and warned of serious economic hardship if the strike continues.
Tiffany and Company purchased a 13.14 carat emerald found in North America for an undisclosed price. The gem, described as the largest and finest cut emerald mined in the region, was bought from Emerald Forest Inc. president Wayne Anthony, who owns the Rist Mine at Hiddenite, North Carolina. The jewel was discovered at the mine in August 1970.

May Rhoads 58 of 7535 E Cambridge is honored with a 11 a.m. Tuesday service at Messinger Chapel. Born in Illinois she moved to Scottsdale a decade ago from Moline I and is survived by two brothers four sisters and a Scottsdale sister Mrs Perry Lewis. Burial follows at Green Acres Memorial Garden. Visitation is 1 to 9 p.m. today.
Lloyd R. Butler 64 of 8416 N 74th Pl died Sunday at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. Born in Iowa he moved from Oelwein after retiring from the hardware business last year. He belonged to Shrine and Masonic Lodge in Oelwein. Survived by wife Lois a daughter Dawn Jensen of Oelwein a sister and two grandchildren. Services and burial will be in Oelwein.
Three Scottsdale residents were treated and released at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital after a four car collision at Scottsdale Road and McDonald Drive around 1:30 a.m. Raptis, Galloway, and Van Dyke were injured. Raptis was cited for failure to yield while turning left. Police investigated three additional two car collisions over the weekend with no injuries.
