Michael W. Westlund 18 of 6879 E Cholla was hospitalized in critical condition after his motorcycle collided with a turning truck on Hayden Road. Barrow Neurological Institute later reported his death, increasing the city 1971 traffic toll to five. two other injuries occurred in separate crashes on Scottsdale and Thomas Roads.
