Senate moves to halt nationwide rails strike
A Senate Labor Committee approved a plan to stop the rails strike by ordering signalmen back to work until Oct 1 with a 17.5 percent interim pay raise. The measure exceeds President Nixon’s July 1 date, and follows a prior similar settlement that granted 13 percent to other unions. House committees weighed parallel legislation as Hodgson warned of drastic economic effects if the strike continued.
