Seattle City Council approves an ordinance to bar motor vehicles from driving or parking except on designated roads and spaces with owner permission. The measure targets hill-climbs near Curtiss Park and the cemetery after last summer’s incidents, with the city citing safety concerns and park access limits.
The city refuses to issue an occupancy permit for the new Fire Hall over zoning greenbelt questions. A public hearing is set for 8 p.m. Tuesday September 5 with a temporary occupancy permit possible pending the outcome. Building inspector is Dick Cole. Mayor George Johnson notes completion by week’s end.
The World Series pits the National League champion Cards against the American League Red Sox at Heme Field this Thursday at 6 pm. The Nat All Stars edged the American All Stars 7 5 in Saline ratings last Tuesday, but the one game clash will decide. The Red Sox lineup and roster are listed with managers and helpers, while the Cards’ group is shown with bat boys, players, and mentors.
Ellsworth A. Collins age 74 and his wife Gretel age 72 died in a Saturday truck car crash near Tecumseh. Collins was driving when his car collided with a 1967 stake truck piggybacked with two others. The truck driver Harrell Moss 22 of Sapulpa Oklahoma was treated for injuries and released. Several others in related vehicles were also treated and released at Saline Community Hospital. Funeral services for Collins and wife were held Wednesday at the First Methodist Church Tecumseh.
The Monday night school budget hearing remained informal and amiable as officials debated a $1,499,704 1967-68 budget. If the 7.54 mills for operation are rejected, substantial changes may be needed. Board members questioned contract negotiations and the impact of state aid, while SEA leaders cautioned about potential disruption without a strike label.
Negotiations reached an impasse after the Board of Education rejected discussions on a salary plan. The offer would start teachers with bachelor’s degrees at 5900 rising to 8800 in 10 years, with higher starts for master’s degrees and elevated maximums, plus 5000 in life insurance. MEC’s Richard Croll objected on behalf of MEA, while talks continue quietly.
A father William K Doty Sr and his four children remain hospitalized after a two car crash six miles east of Howell killed Mrs Juanita Doty and two others. Debbie 13 Bill 12 Bruce 9 Henry 7 are listed in fair or critical condition at McPherson and University Hospital. The crash also killed Mrs Barbara Prill and two daughters Judy Ann 8 Tammy Lynn 4. Contributions for the family are requested at Vescio Market.
