The Be light turnout on Monday approved the 7.54 extra operating levy for the Mills School District with 485 yes and 284 no from 773 votes, including 10 absentee. The levy replaces six mills and adds 1.46 more on the tax bill, while debt service is lower as bonds for the new high school were not sold.
Mediator recommends official fact finding for Saline schools amid salary disputes with the SEA charging the board’s offer is inadequate. Cherry Hill ruling expected on union contracts could shape whether teachers strike or work without pay as Saline weighs opening with or without staff.
The Saline Community Fair begins Tuesday on the Farm Council grounds with five days of events including new contests, shows, and rides. Highlights include lamb judging, horse pulling, children’s day on Wednesday, live stock judging, pony show, Miss Saline crowning, tractor events, livestock auction, teen bands, and a Jaycees food concession operating daily from 8 am to 10 pm. Free bus service from Saline Junior High to the fairgrounds is provided nightly.
The Washtenaw Saline district uses an IBM based data processing center to auto schedule about 950 students across 22 schools. The system processed roughly 18 000 class schedules with minimal errors and saves teachers time. it also handles report cards payroll census and budgeting planning.
Grand champion honors at the Michigan State Fair went to Saline exhibitors in open class swine. Ernest Girbach owned the Poland China grand champion sow while Kirk Gordon owned the grand champion boar and his junior boar also earned top honors. Robert Girbach named Premier Michigan Breeder.
Paul G ibson chair of the Local Talent Contest at the Saline Fair reports only five entries so far in any category. Prizes range 15 10 and 5 dollars with 2 dollars to all entrants. Contest runs 8 30 p m on Wednesday September 6 open to ages six through 14 and 15 through 101.
Old Settlers who have lived within 10 miles of Saline for 50 years or more may register for prizes at the Business and Professional Women's booth at the Saline Fair. Prizes include $5 for the oldest man and oldest woman and $10 for the oldest married couple. Contestants must be at least 65. Residence need not be consecutive. Nina Arend is chairman. Registered Old Settlers wearing ribbons will be admitted free to the fairgrounds on Saturday.
The Saline area United Fund budget committee meets with participating agencies to discuss requests for the forming campaign. Members include Mrs. Donald Leidheiser and Mrs. Robert Dobson with Don Church as drive chairman. Neil Lindemann resigned. replacement not yet named. The board plans a September meeting to set the 1967 campaign goal, targeting mid October opening.
