Saline area Blood Bank collects 52 pints from 64 donors

Sixty four donors visited the Saline area Blood Bank on Tuesday adding 52 pints to the bank. A new gallon donor was Leroy Buchanan. About 14 or 15 donors were hourly or salaried workers from Uniloy. Blood Bank chairman Hileen Austin thanked Dale Brown of Uniloy and all donors, postponed donors, and volunteers. The donor list names many individuals including Jim Hering and the Rev. Lawrence Cole among others.

Cave-in Injures Workman in Ypsilanti

Joseph Shorter a 44 year old Ypsilanti resident was buried to the neck by sliding earth at an east edge excavation near a shopping center project on E Michigan near the Ford plant. He was rescued by fellow workers and sent first to Saline Community Hospital then to Beyer Hospital in satisfactory condition.

Saline to host 1968 Michigan Junior Champ track meet

Saline Jaycees won a bid to stage the 1968 Michigan Junior Champ track and field meet July in Saline attracting more than 250 top high school athletes from 25 to 30 chapters plus coaches and parents. Local Jaycees led by Jack Kelley and supporters campaigned at Benton Harbor to win the event, with state qualifiers expected to travel from across Michigan to compete. The local club will also escort the top 13 senior qualifiers to the national meet after the state tourney here.

Mediator Speeds Michigan School Contract Talks

A Michigan Labor Mediation Board representative joined school contract talks Tuesday night. Negotiations, limited to eight pages of forty four, moved faster with three sessions planned this week and five pages completed in one session. Walter H. Quillico, named by SEA, urged swift action as Hallie Mehler noted progress and optimism for a timely start of school. SEA offered ongoing availability in late August to finish terms. Gerald Coe said negotiations progress and more frequent future meetings are likely.

St Andrews Launches 300000 Capital Campaign for New Church

St Andrews Mission begins a two year capital drive directed by John V McCarthy and Associates to fund a new church and parish administration building. Co chairmen Eugene Carpen tier and Larry Skinner lead a large committee as the drive runs through August 31 with a 24 month pledge period.

Final meetings and notices from Saline library clubs

The final meeting of the Junior Boo Discussion Club is at 8 p m this Thursday in the library. The Adult Discussion Club meets at 8 p m Thursday August 24. Story time is discontinued until further notice. Saline Library’s peak circulation month was 1967 with 3094 books, compared with about 6000 for all of 1957.

Saline-Ann Arbor Road Improvement Starts

Work begins on a 12000 project to straighten the Scurve at Ann Arbor entrance. The Saline-Ann Arbor road will widen to five lanes over 1700 feet near Saline High School and close south of Scio Church Road for six to eight weeks. Traffic will reopen for the fall University football season around September 20.

The Jaycees host a teen dance Friday from 8 to 11 30 pm at the Junior High School. Music by the Outkasts. Tickets cost 1 per person and records will be given away.

A Kiwanis Club meeting featured an automotive and highway safety film. Guy Hedrick served as program chairman. The next gathering is Ladies’ Night with a 7 p.m. picnic at Clyde Hoover’s home.

Saline school budget hearing sets 1967-68 plan

A public hearing at 8 p.m. Monday in the High School library reviews Saline's 1967-68 budget of 1 499 704. The plan adds four portable classrooms and 15 teachers, boosting staff across Jen sen Elementary Houghton Junior High and High School. State Aid drops to 454 708 with a 936 973 tax and interest income expected to support the budget.

Miss Saline Entry Blanks Available for Jaycees Contest

Entry blanks are available for the annual Miss Saline contest sponsored by Jaycees. Chairman is George Kempf of 192 Wallace Dr. The crowning occurs Thursday night September 7 at 8 pm at the Fairgrounds. Judging is Tuesday September 5, not open to the public. Contenders must be 16 to 25, unmarried, residents of Saline School District.
