Teen's rail-gun inspired engine powered by scrap and science
Sweeney, a Beckley area student, compares his EMPulse Drive to a rail gun and rocket, built from scrap materials and powered by capacitors and hydrogen, showing it could produce nearly 500 metric tons of thrust with minimal fuel. He envisions space shuttle level power in a compact form, limited only by current energy sources. He won runner-up in 1997 state fair engineering and Air Force categories and plans further development with his mother supporting travel to Texas competitions.
