Curtis Ames 84 Lanark dies after long illness in Beckley
Curtis Catfish Ames 84 of Lanark died Thursday April 23 1998 in a Beckley hospital after a long illness. He was a Navy World War II veteran retired coal miner with more than 40 years in the coalfields and a member of UMWA. Survivors include two sons Tony and William, a daughter in law Nancy, and other relatives. Services set for 11 a.m. Monday Melton Mortuary Chapel with burial at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Beckley. Pallbearers named Tony Greg Ames Rusty Adkins James Lilly Jackie Ritchie Bob Burdette Rick Levy Stephen Todd. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary Beckley.

James Edward Mullens 70 of Allen Junction died Thursday April 23 1998 in a Beckley hospital after a long illness. He was born August 21 1927 in Itmann son of the late Rev Edward Mullens and Mary Hatfield Mullens a retired coal miner UMWA Local 9690 District 29 and a deacon of Corinne Pentecostal Church of God. Survives include wife Sylvia two sons James Eugene Mullens and Robert Lee Mullens a daughter Deborah Conner a brother Lonnie Mullens a sister Ruby Byrd and eight grandchildren. Funeral service 1 p.m. Sunday at Corinne Pentecostal Church of God. Arrangements by Williams Blue Ridge Funeral Home Sophia. Grandsons to serve as pallbearers.

Beckley man waives hearing in Arkansas robbery case
Ernest Manning 33 waived preliminary hearing and extradition on charges of robbery with a street weapon in Arkansas. He allegedly beat hitchhiker Alvin Francis with a claw hammer on Union Hall Road in Stanford after offering a ride. Francis, 35, was hospitalized. Manning faces 2 to 10 years if convicted.
