Even modest weight adds risk, and those about 35 percent overweight face at least a threefold increase. The study counters the belief that asthma leads to weight gain, showing obesity preceded diagnosis.
Woodrow Wilson High School student Jeremy Sweeney develops a model engine using rail guns coil guns and particle accelerators. At West Virginia Science and Engineering Fair he wins grand champion and multiple awards earning 850 dollars plus a plaque a gold medal and equipment for his school. He will represent West Virginia at the Intel ISEF in Fort Worth Texas next month. His engine achieves 90.72 percent efficiency with a peak 453.6 metric tons of force.
About 200 students from West Virginia colleges and high schools role played inmates at the historic Moundsville prison reviving a Civil War era facility. The mock takeover involved hostage scenarios as correctional officers, with 300 officers and observers from 29 states plus Canada and Puerto Rico. One student, Oravec, was killed during the staged crisis after a fellow inmate — Brandon Knorr — led the execution, calling for action when negotiators stalled.
