Wheat yields rise with fertilizer in Indiana trials
Purdue researchers report 1947 tests in 15 Indiana counties show wheat yields up seven bushels per acre with 150 to 200 pounds per acre of fertilizer and up to nine and a half bushels with 300 to 400 pounds per acre. Demonstrations on various soils produced similar gains. 165 pounds of 0-12-12 raised five bushels, doubling the application yielded seven.

Machinery Replacing Labor in Cotton Belt Farming
The article notes nearly a million tractors operate on farms across 18 cotton states, drastically cutting labor and time. Mechanical gear such as flame cultivators and two row equipment slash man hours per acre from 118 to about 19.7, with harvesters yielding 1,500 pounds in 2 hours 20 minutes versus 15 pounds per hour by hand pickers.

Spoilage of Stored Grain Hinges on Bin Condition
The USDA says grain stored in farm-type bins holding 1 000 to 3 000 bushels can deteriorate little if bins stay dry cool clean and insect free. For insect control fumigation is key. Shelled corn has stored for years with losses under 1 percent according to official reports.
