Obituary of George W Mitchell Comes to Final Rest

George William Mitchell born April 22 1864 Boone County Iowa immigrated to Nebraska in 1871 with his parents. He married Minnie L Johnson December 1 1885 and later returned to Nebraska settling on a Polk County farm. He died August 24 1948 aged 84 and is survived by two sons, two grandsons, one great granddaughter, and many relatives.

Corn crop damaged by intense heat across Nebraska

Hot winds in Nebraska over ten days damaged the corn crop with lower yields than expected. Polk County fared better than areas south and west, where many fields are severely hurt and some farmers harvest for ensilage. State reports show the heaviest losses south of the Platte River and west of Lincoln.

Shower for Bride to Be in Clarks Attended by Adelsons

A miscellaneous shower for Miss Joan Nelson was held at Mrs. Robert Lindahl’s home in Clarks with about 70 attendees. Mrs. Willard Adelson Mrs. Frank Adelson and Mrs. Leslie Adelson served as hostesses assisted by Mrs. Dittmer and Mrs. Terry. The future bride, granddaughter of Mrs. Frank Adelson of Polk, received many gifts.

Polk County Fair Ends With Large Attendance Despite Rain

The 1948 Polk County Fair concluded with large entries across divisions though rain on the final day marred the parade and floats. Hale Shows of Tomorrow provided a strong midway, while the Williams and Lee free acts drew cheers. A Wednesday ball game saw Osceola Juniors beat Phillipsburg 3 2 thanks to Roger Long's base running. Stromsburg dominated Thursday night 12 0 as Smoky Moulden faltered early. Attendance was reportedly high, with plans by Fair Board president Paul Monson for future growth noted.

Noble in Los Angeles Hospital After Heart Attack

Word reached that Ross Noble and his wife, visiting their daughter in California, are in a Los Angeles hospital following a heart attack. He is progressing as well as can be expected. The Nobles had planned to return to Clarks last week.

Langsjoen Rodine wedding at First Lutheran St Peter

Miss Gertrude Langsjoen and Floyd Rodine wed at First Lutheran Church in St Peter Minnesota on August 15 with Rev W T Matson officiating. The ceremony featured violin and organ preludes, family attendants in colonial attire, and a reception for 200 at Rundstrom Lounge GA College. The newlyweds plan a northern Minnesota and Canada honeymoon before settling locally.

Nyberg Nyquist nuptials at Evangelical Free Church Polk

Miss Shirley Nyberg and Arlyn Hanquist united in a double ring ceremony at the Evangelical Free Church in Polk Nebraska. Rev H G Bodine officiated. The wedding featured formal gowns, floral arrangements, music, and a reception. The couple will reside in York where he works at Brown McDonald's after graduating from Polk High School and G A College.

Junior team edges Phillipsburg in tight Osceola win

Osceola defeats Phillipsburg 3 to 2 at the Polk County Fair in a pitching and base running duel. Roger Long sparked the rally with a walk steal of second and home, then later scored the tying run as Rex Grossnicklaus delivered a clutch hit in the ninth. Pink McCormick pitched well for Osceola, while Jerry Link went the distance for Philipsburg.

Obituary of Rev. A. F. Smith

Rev. A F Smith age 79 3 20 departed August 20 1948 born April 25 1869 in Nebraska City Nebraska. He married Nellie Grace Stone in 1902 later married Carrie Eaton and had eight children. He served Nebraska ministers across many towns retiring in 1935 remained active in church a pneumonia death followed funeral in Polk Nebraska August 24 with burial at Polk cemetery.
