Legion Auxiliary Meets Holds Installations and Plans

The American Legion Auxiliary opened the year with a meeting at the Legion Club Rooms. New officers were installed for the year including President Margaret Jones and Vice President Silvia Sandell. Members voted to meet in the Legion Hall and arranged a float and a stand for the Fall Celebration. A lunch for 35 members was served by hostesses Horstman Sundberg Dahlin and Kisler.

Polk Emmanuel Lutheran Church wedding of Margaret Gertsch

Miss Margaret Gertsch wed Donald Scheapler at Polk Emmanuel Lutheran Church in a September Sunday ceremony officiated by Rev C W Long. Attendants wore coordinated gowns, three-tier cake graced the reception, and the couple left for a Colorado wedding trip en route to a new home on the groom's farm south of Polk.

Miss Arlene Hahn and Miss Hazel Hansen of Minneapolis spent the weekend with the Hahn family in Lincoln. Mrs. Oscar Sundberg drove Janet to Lincoln for Wesleyan University. Mrs. Perry Garretson from near Stromsburg visited D. A. Mayo’s family. Miss Margaret Peterson of Denver stayed with Polk relatives before boarding to Alma to visit Eldon and Mrs Schroder.

Polk County 4-H Winners Shine at 1948 Nebraska State Fair

Polk County 4-H members excelled at the Nebraska State Fair with purple ribbon wins in Complete Costume and Spice Cup Cakes. Blue ribbons went to several entries in dress, demonstration, and sewing events. About 1200 4-Hers attended a banquet hosted by Gold and Company, with polk representatives JoAnn Taddiken Rogene Lees and others. The Polk Saddle Club also competed, parading with the 4-H flag and earning blue and red ribbons in riding events.

High Prairie Farm Bureau to Elect Officers Friday

The High Prairie Farm Bureau will meet on Friday September 17 at the High Prairie School for officer elections. Mrs Ray Werner and children and Mr and Mrs Eddie Thorne attended the State Fair on Friday. Mr and Mrs Gilbert Benson and Ronnie were dinner guests Wednesday evening at the home of Mr and Mrs Leo Wurtz and Daniel.

4-H Saddle Club Demonstration Encourages Horsemanship

Bob Hopwood and others received white ribbons as the 4-H saddle club showcased horsemanship skills. Club leaders Ted Cannon and Harry McCauley praised the event, urging more youths to enroll in 4-H projects like dairy, calves, and bred gilts while outlining upcoming meetings, record-keeping, and a radio segment on September 18.

Highway Safety Program at Osceola 4-H Building

On September 29 the State Highway Department will present a highway safety program at the 4-H Building, County Fair Grounds in Osceola. Sponsored by the Polk County Women's Council, the event supports the safety campaign and citizen welfare. Public invited.

Old Nebraska U Hall to be Torn Down for Engineering Building

The original University of Nebraska U Hall, begun in 1871 and noted for its leaking roof and cold chapel, is being torn down this month to clear space for a modern engineering facility. Built on Lincoln’s 11th Street, the decrepit structure was finally retired after decades of repairs and fragile construction.

Arborville Social Notes Track Neighborhood Guests

Arborville Missionary Society met at Mrs Floyd Merchants home with eight members present. Numerous local families and guests visited relatives, attended the State Fair, dined in Bradshaw and Omahas, and two weddings were noted. The Town Hall Club postponed its meeting to September 29.

Janice Sandin of Omaha visited her parents Rudolph and Mrs. Sandin. Ebert Turnquist of Ceresco visited with Rev A E Franzen family. Petrus Nelson departed for Rock Island to visit Theodore Nelson and Victor Krol homes. Virgil Johnson and sons of Hershey visited Mrs Esther Johnson. Donald Forss, Luther College student, spent the weekend with his parents Adolph and Mrs Forss. Martin Lundstrom family spent Saturday in Omaha. Tra Tehr and daughters Connie and Charlene of Lincoln visited the Martin Jones home Friday. Miss Gloria Jones spent days with Harold and Mrs Nelson.

Popular Couple United in Marriage

The wedding of Miss Marlene Nelson and Carl M Glen Jr took place Sunday August 29 in Auburn with a four o'clock ceremony. The couple exchanged rings before about 60 relatives as Rev. Ottis Platt presided. The bride wore blonde satin and carried cream gladioli and white pom flowers with a brown orchid. The groom is from Auburn and both will reside in Lincoln after September 15. Many local relatives attended from Polk Hampton Nordville Clarks and nearby areas.

Local Families Attend Events and Visits Across Town

Mr and Mrs Orlie Muller and Don went to the State Fair on Thursday and Don remained for Wesleyan University. Johnnie Preston and family from near York dined with Mrs Hennie Seymour's grandmother, then met her grandfather Charles McGinnis. Mrs Mable Dornburgh had surgery at Stromsburg hospital last Monday. Several women visited Dornburgh at the hospital on Friday. Diane Sandell spent Friday evening with uncle Gordon Fossberg. Henry Sandell and Mrs. Carl Waak with Milford Johnson visited Stromsburg Saturday. A C Bates drove Arthur and Jimmie Sundbeg to Lincoln Sunday for Wesleyan University.
