Four Main Advantages From Cover Crops Reduce Erosion

Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station researchers report four benefits of cover crops sown with corn and other crops. They protect soil August to May, build organic matter May to June, add nitrogen especially with legumes, and may boost next year’s corn yields. A seeding plan uses an endgate seeder with cultivator weeders to broadcast seed before laying by the corn.

Tests at Newton Illinois show sweet clover on limed and fertilized soil yielded 63 pounds more nitrogen and a ton more organic matter per acre than lime-only soil. Well-fed legumes improve soil tilth by deep tap roots, breaking plow sole and promoting better air and moisture, aiding subsequent crops.
