Early lamp patents span 1798 to 1831 with notable makers

The 1798 patent goes to John Love of South Carolina for a tallow lamp. The oldest known lamp is William Howe’s nursery lamp from 1812. A second patent in 1831 to John W. Schulz and William Trull followed a run of about twenty other patents in the interim. Kipling autographs story notes a butcher selling his checks as autographs after a bank slip confusion.
