Lost Colony Clew Found On Rock In North Carolina

A stone slab found along the Chowan river bears Elizabethan inscriptions said to reveal the fate of Roanoke Island colonists and Virginia Dare. Dr. Haywood J. Pearce Jr of Emory University interprets lines crediting Eleanor White Dare and Ananias Dare as ancestors of Virginia Dare, born 1587.

Unpublished 1768 Washington Letter Found in Michigan

University of Michigan student John Alden discovered a May 17, 1768 letter from George Washington. Written to John Blair acting governor of Virginia, it urged a western boundary to keep present day southwestern Pennsylvania open to white settlement, for traders supplying Fort Pitt. The missive, in Gen. Thomas Gage papers at the William L. Clements Library, circulated among the Gage family for about 150 years.

Log Travels 1000 Miles Through Arctic Waters

A log drifted about 1000 miles from the Mackenzie River mouth near Aklavik to Bellot Strait on an Arctic cruise. Maj. D. L. McKeand found it last summer and brought it to Ottawa for study. Forestry labs confirmed the log as black spruce a species not found near Bellot Strait and estimated the log to be a century old.
