Death of Ashton Shallenberger During Speech in Franklin Neb

Former Polk County resident Ashton Shallenberger who served several terms as congressman and was a rare Democratic governor of the state died suddenly while delivering a speech in Franklin Tuesday.

Thelander Wins Coveted 4-H Club Week Award

Mervin Thelander of Osceola is awarded a prize trip to the annual 4-H Club Week at the Nebraska college of agriculture campus in June. Burlington railroad presents the honor, with 64 leaders statewide receiving similar recognition. Wilma Heimer named as alternate. Thelander led Polk county sheep clubs and tested cattle with the Dairy Herd Improvement Association, showcasing leadership and farming progress. About 400 4-H members and leaders attend yearly, offering Thelander a chance to meet others from across the state.

Otoe County Considers Printing Relief Rolls

Otoe county commissioners weighed a plan to publish the names of all direct relief recipients. Two members supported immediate publication while others cautioned on legality. The proposal, from the Taxpayers League, aims to cut relief costs and align county spending with income.

Boy Scout Benefit Basketball Games Sponsored by Polk

On Wednesday March 2 the Boy Scouts of Polk sponsor three basketball games with all proceeds to the Scout fund. The 7 pm lineup features Polk grades vs Central City grades, 8 pm Polk townies vs Central College Kampus Rats, and 9 pm Polk Professional men vs Polk business men. Admission 25c and 10c. Also notes weekend dinner guests the Adelsons.

Church Services and Plans for Lenten Services in Polk

The notice lists worship times at Swede Plains M. E. Church and Immanuel Lutheran, with minister E. E. Pengelly and Pastor Carl F. Juergensen. It notes Lutheran Hour broadcasts on RTAB KFAB and English and German services at 10:30 and 9:30. Plans are underway for special Lenten services at Polk Town Hall on Wednesday or Friday evenings with announcements to come.

The Methodist and Free Methodist list morning and evening services with pastors and revival phrases. Mr and Mrs E J Thompson moved to Council Bluffs where he becomes district manager for an oil company. W C Christie of York will succeed him in Stromsburg. Mrs J A Westenius attended the state press association in Omaha. Stromsburg again votes on the Sunday movie issue and a liquor store petition fails as not permitted this year. Yessir banquet in York drew over 100 Omaha attendees. Fred Nelsons relocate to Missouri after moving from Genoa. Grabills visit David City. Harlan Fusby learns of Ruth Burgeson’s death in California auto crash.

Supreme Court Reverses Trial in Hylton Estate Suit

The Iowa Supreme Court reversed a Polk County District Court ruling, sending the case back for trial. The suit seeks $3,780 in unpaid annuities and interest from a 1917 land transfer to Eva Krueger and her grandchildren, with an annuity contract tied to the deed. The court held that an annuity payment provision in a simultaneous contract and deed can be foreclosed in equity if unpaid.

Five Junior High Players Escape Serious Injury in Crash

Five Central City Junior High School players and driver Ellsworth Howe escaped serious injury when their car struck a truck at Gayle's corner six miles north of Central City on Friday evening. The car brakes failed to hold at a stop sign and the vehicle was driven by Forrest L. Morris of Comstock. Howe is well known in the area.

Swede Home Store Holds Annual Meeting

The Swede Home Store held its annual business meeting on Friday afternoon. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Directors for the coming year were elected: Herman Jones, Alex Adelson, August F. Carlson, Otto Swanson, and Herbert Flodman. Treasurer and auditor reports were read and approved. The final statement was reported as fair.

Obituary of Carl Arvid Olson

Carl Arvid Olson was born in Sweden on October 13 1876 and died February 12 at age 61 after living near Polk and Hordville. He married Clara Forss in 1929 and is survived by a sister Mrs Sherman Hilligas and a brother August in Wilke Canada. Funeral services were held at the local Baptist Church with interment in Swede Plain Cemetery.

Miss Stella Scheapler and Raymond Stunkel united in marriage Sunday evening at 7 30 at the Scheapler home in Polk. Rev Carl Jorgensen officiated as tile arch of violet blue and white bells framed the vows. A two course luncheon followed for about 70 guests. The couple will reside on a farm near Hordville.
