Action in Polk Grain and Fertilizer Trade
The grain fertilizer and feed business along Polk’s railroad right of way grows with demand for fertilizer including anhydrous dry and liquid forms. Hog and cattle feeders rely on dealers to keep self feeders filled as grain storage expands beyond 1 300 000 bushels. Union Pacific rebuilds the Central City Omaha branch replacing 70 lb rail with 131 lb rail and heavier welded mainline rail. 120 workers foremen and machine operators move 144 to 1 ½ miles of track every two days east from Central City. Last year the roadbed was rebuilt and non creosoted ties replaced with creosoted ties.
