Mrs Ronald Meerkatz was celebrated at a miscellaneous shower held June 21 at the Wayland Flodman home. Bridal games followed by opening of many lovely gifts. Hostesses were Wanda Flodman and Phyllis Ostberg.
Osceola and Polk plan a July 4 baseball double header at the local field starting 7:00 p.m. with 12-14 then 15-17 age games, followed by a fireworks display funded by the Polk Volunteer Firemen. Ticket prices are 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children.

Mr and Mrs Paul Killion and family of Julesburg Colorado were Wednesday and overnight guests in the Larry Killion home. Mrs Dale Hayes of Lincoln and Mrs Roger Clough of York were Saturday afternoon coffee guests in the Robert Merchant home. Bob Brockevelt arrived home on Thursday after receiving his discharge from the army.
July 1 1971 is declared National Postal Service Day. The U S Postal Service will operate as an independent establishment of the Executive Branch. First day souvenir envelopes will be given to each family and order blanks are available for 30 by 40 inch historic stamp posters.
W John Nyberg of Polk and Duane Lindblade of Osceola were awarded Certificates of Service from the Nebraska State ASC Committee. Nyberg served 15 years on the Pleasant Home precinct committee, Lindblade 10 years on the Osceola precinct committee, both aiding county administration of ASCS farm programs. They have been part time field employees in addition to their committeeman roles. Precinct committeemen face annual reelection, Nyberg having been elected 15 times and Lindblade 10.
Mrs. Ella Clara Long, 65, died Monday June 28 at North Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem. Funeral services are Wednesday June 30 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Hickory. Widow of Rev C W Long former pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Polk. Survived by daughter Eleanor two sons Roger and Charles three grandchildren sister and brother. Obituary notes their move to Brighton Colorado in 1950 and Rev Long's death two years earlier.
Cheryl Anderson daughter of Mr and Mrs Forrest Anderson Stromsburg a sophomore at Nebraska Wesleyan University earns Dean's List for the second semester. Students must complete at least 12 credit hours with a 3.8 GPA or higher.
Jim Brazda Sr brought in the first load of 1971 wheat to the Farmer's Co-op Grain elevator on Tuesday June 29. The wheat tested 60 with 12 percent moisture and was harvested Monday. He noted the field averaged 51 bushels per acre. Mr and Mrs Arnold Neuhaus attended Clarkson High School reunion events in Clarkson.
Bobby Nieto eight year old son of Mr and Mrs Victor Nieto drowned Friday June 18 in a pond near a shopping center in Imperial Beach California. His brother Victor ten and friend Gilbert Switzer eleven tried to help while Michael Ray Burgess freed the others and retrieved the body. Graveside services were held at Holy Cross Cemetery. The boy is survived by his parents two brothers and a sister. Onlookers describe emergency responders performing mouth to mouth resuscitation before transporting the body to the pond owners.
The Polk Salvation Army Service Unit reports a total of 189.10 dollars raised from a fund drive. Thanks are given to the Polk Woman's Club for sponsoring the effort and to all supporters. Jo Strand serves as Secretary-Treasurer.
Attendance is strong for the Pork Woman’s Club sponsored children’s Summer Reading program. Every Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Hotel Lobby, children split into three reading groups until 3:30. Readers include Mary Wischmeier Erma Adelson Ann Moore Karen Merchant Marie Clymer Eleanor Stromberg and Janice Widga. The six week program ends July 21 and promotes Polk Library reading material.
The Silver Wedding Anniversary of Mr and Mrs Arnold Neuhaus was celebrated Saturday evening in the Community Hall. Fifty relatives and attendants enjoyed a 7 o'clock supper with friends arriving later. The Neuhouses were married on Saturday June 29 1946.
