Immunity to DDT Debated Among Flies

Scientists discuss whether fly immunity to DDT is developing as resistance. Entomologists note insects can become resistant and lab tests show DDT resistant fly strains. Natural resistance unlikely in short time. failures likely due to poor product or sanitation gaps like manure and damp spots where flies breed. DDT acts slowly, sometimes hours after contact.

Reviving Grindstone With Carbide Cutting Tool

A battered farm grindstone is trued by dressing with a sharp pointed tool attached to a small board. The tool uses a dark cutting tip made of carbide, described as the hardest metal made by man.

Insecticide and supplements urged for farmers

Farmers are advised to use a new insecticide pyrenance to control flies on livestock and to consider protein supplements in rations as grain prices rise. It notes pullets should be well cared for to improve egg production next fall, and mentions benzene hexachloride being added to hog products for lice control in farming practices.

Tests Show Tung Meal Poisonous to Chickens

Tests at the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station show tung meal is poisonous as a protein source for chicks. Raw or processed forms caused high mortality at 10 and 15 percent inclusion. At 5 percent and higher levels the tung meal impaired feed utilization and growth.
